So, what are the steps to creating and submitting an article online? There are many ways to submit an article but let’s start with some basics of Article creation.

Creating an article

1. Be sure to pick a topic for your article that will spark interest and will create value.
2. Do your homework and find 3 keyword phrases that are relevant to your article and are good search terms.
3. Once you have 3 good keyword phrases be sure to do the following
   1. Use the keywords in the title of your Article
   2. Add the keywords to the body of your article and to the end of the article

SEO Prep Work before submitting the article

1. Be sure to post your new article to your website first before submitting it to the Article Directories.   This will show that you had the content first on your website.  This is important for content originality in the Google Algorithm.
2. Ping your article on Google by doing a search for your new article post
3. Be sure to include the keyword phrases you used in your article in the MetaTags of your webpage.  You can have your webmaster do this for you if you are not sure how to do this.

Essentially I explained to my client that it is important to have the following items in place to help build traffic:

1. Keyword research needs to be done on keywords that will be used on the website. The research is important because we need to find out if indeed people are using the keywords that we want to place on the site. It would make no sense to spend a lot of time and money setting up a page with keywords that no one is really searching for.
2. Fresh Content – It is very important to have fresh content on a website so that the search engines continue to index the new content.  In the web world Content is King and Links are Queen! Having fresh content helps with the SEO of the page and with the ranking.
3. Link Building – it is important to build incoming links to a website.  The more incoming links you have the more the search engines will like your website and rank it higher. Why? Because a website with a lot of incoming links is viewed by Google as a resourceful website.
4. High Ranking – why is it important to rank high on a search?  The higher you rank the better the chances are that your website will display on page one or two of a Google search.  Websites that display within the first 10 searches of the Google page get about 75% of the clicks.  Therefore the higher you rank the more traffic you will get.
5. Blog – a blog on a website is great because posting an article to your blog generates new content on your website. This will help the ranking of the website.
6. Create one Press Release a month with keywords that are relevant to the service the website provides.  Press Releases are a great way to generate traffic to a website and incoming links.

Ok, so I just shared 6 things you can do to help optimize and create traffic for your website.  But what is the purpose of generating traffic if you’re website is not getting phone calls?

The most important goal you must determine for your website is what it is you want website visitors to do when they come to your website?  Do you want them to sign up for a free quote? Or maybe call your 800 number, or sign up for your blog?

My point here is that generating traffic to a website can be done in time with the right strategies, however you want to be able to setup your website so that when new visitors come to it they buy, contact, or email you.

In summary having a strategy for how your website will handle the traffic that you generate is VERY IMPORTANT otherwise you are just wasting your time and money to build traffic.

Here are two examples that will help convey the importance of optimizing your website with local search keywords.

Scenario:
John lives in San Jose, CA and is looking online for a pizza restaurant that offers New Your Style pizzas.

John’s first Search:
John goes to Google and does a search for “New York Pizza”, the results are a list of Pizzeria’s in the state of New York .  Well, John is in San Jose CA so this search won’t help him find a local pizza restaurant.

John’s second Search:
John realizes that he did not include the local city that he lives in when he did his search, so he goes back to Google and does another search but this time includes the city he lives in: “New York Pizza San Jose”.
This time John gets a list of local San Jose Pizza restaurants that offer New York Style pizzas. And this is exactly what he is looking for!

In Johns second search every website that came up on page one of Google had the Keywords “New York Pizza” and “San Jose” incorporated into the content of their websites.

In summary, it’s important to have Local Targeted content on your website so that local customers can find your website when they search for your services!

So let me get to the point:

1. Think about what your website represents to the website visitors that are looking for your services. For example if your website offers vacation rentals make sure that your website has the correct look and feel so that when you get a visitor to your site they get a good first impression. – Really understand your audience!
2. Make sure you have good content and good keywords setup on your website. Do spend some time making sure your website is optimized for the search engines.
3. Find out how your competition ranks so that you know where you stand with keywords you want to pursue.
4. Get other websites to link back to your website one way. The more good relevant links that you have coming to your website the better you will rank. This can take 2 to 3 months to create but well worth your investment.

1. Get your business listed on the Google Business Directory, the Yahoo Business Directory, and the Bing Business Directory? It’s like Free advertising. The more you provide the easier it is for customers to find you!

1. Market your business on Craig’s List.  Put together 5 to 10 different HTML ads and post them weekly -  It’s free and they work!
